What Can a Professional Organiser in Henley-on-Thames Help With?

I've been helping women and their families declutter and organise their homes in and around Henley-on-Thames for ten years, and very few people contact me simply because they want a tidier house.
Usually, there's something specific that's bothering them.
It might be a room that's gradually become a dumping ground, a wardrobe that no longer works for them, paperwork they keep meaning to sort or a house move that's made them realise just how much stuff they've accumulated.
Sometimes, though, the reason is rather more Henley-specific.
Getting a house ready for Regatta
Earlier this year, I helped a client prepare their home to rent out during Henley Royal Regatta.
The family were moving out for the week while rowers and their families stayed in the house, so we needed to look at their home slightly differently. It wasn't just about making everything look tidy. Another family needed to be able to arrive and actually live there.
We cleared personal belongings and created space in wardrobes and drawers for their guests' clothes. In the kitchen, we made sure there were enough pots and pans and that everyday things had an obvious home and were easy to find.
That last bit is really important.
If you're staying in someone else's house, you don't want to have to hunt through several cupboards to find the tea bags or wonder where the frying pan lives. Tea and coffee near the kettle and coffee machine makes sense. Pots and pans together near the oven and hob makes sense. Washing powder should be close to the washing machine too.
And the same principle applies whether you're organising a home for guests or for yourself. If there's one place for spare batteries, everyone knows where to look when they need one — and where any new batteries go when they're bought. In your wardrobe, keeping your shirts together and your tops together means you can see what you've got and plan what you're going to wear without rummaging around trying to find things.
When things are scattered around the house — or even around the same room — it's much harder to know what you already have. That's when you end up wasting time searching for things or buying something again because you can't find it.
The organising and decluttering didn't stop inside the house either. We went through the outdoor games box, checked that everything was complete and made sure it was ready for the guests to use. Even the croquet sets were put back together and made ready for a game!
The initial goal wasn't really to declutter the house. It was to make sure another family could move in temporarily and live there comfortably.
But we used the opportunity to have a real blitz as we went. Things that were no longer needed went to the charity shop, and the things they wanted to keep were organised and given a logical home.
Yes, all of that needed to happen to get the house ready for the guests, but there was a rather lovely added bonus: when my clients came home after Regatta, they came back to a home that was considerably more organised, with less clutter and much more space.
Living by the river comes with quite a lot of stuff!
Living in and around Henley also means finding somewhere to keep all the things that come with enjoying the river and the summer.

Paddleboards, boating equipment, picnic things and everything that comes out for summer events and festivals all need somewhere to live when they're not being used.
Once summer is over, the paddleboard that's been easy to grab every weekend might not be touched again for months.
That's a good time to have a quick sort through everything that goes with your summer activities before it all gets packed away. Are the paddleboard pumps, bags and accessories all together? Is anything broken or missing? Are there old picnic plates, cups or cool bags that you no longer use?
And make sure everything is clean and completely dry before you pack it away — particularly paddleboards, bags and other kit that's been used on or near the water. The last thing you want is to unpack it next summer and discover it's been sitting damp all winter.
Then there's the important bit: where is the most sensible place for it all to live until you need it again?
It doesn't need to become a huge decluttering exercise. It's about getting rid of anything that's no longer useful, grouping together the things that belong together and giving them a logical home, rather than putting everything wherever there happens to be a gap.
Then, when next summer comes around, you know exactly where everything is.
Your home needs to change as your life does
Of course, most of my work in Henley doesn't involve croquet sets or paddleboards!
I help with all sorts of things.
It could be sorting and organising a wardrobe so getting dressed in the morning is easier, or tackling paperwork that has accumulated on the kitchen table or in various drawers around the house.
It might be reclaiming a spare room, reorganising kitchen cupboards, preparing for a renovation or decluttering before a house move so you're not paying a removals company to transport things you don't actually want.
And sometimes there isn't one obvious problem. The house simply doesn't seem to work as well as it once did.
That's quite normal. Families change, children get older, work gets busier and the things we own and use change too. A system that worked perfectly well five years ago might not make sense anymore.
You don't necessarily need to reorganise everything. Often a few practical changes — particularly giving things a logical home and making them easy to put away again — can make a surprisingly big difference.
Decluttering and home organisation in Henley-on-Thames
For me, good home organisation isn't about creating a home that looks perfect.
Whether we're preparing your house for Regatta guests, finding somewhere sensible for the paddleboards, sorting a wardrobe or finally getting on top of the paperwork, the question I'm interested in is:
What would make this work better for you?
Sometimes that's decluttering. Sometimes it's simply deciding where something should live so that everybody in the house knows where to find it and where to put it back.
Decluttering and organising are the tools. The real aim is to make your home easier to live in and easier to manage.
