A genuinely organised home isn’t necessarily the one with the prettiest cupboards or the most impressive storage solutions.

It’s the one that makes everyday life feel easier.

💎 Things have a home, but that home makes sense for where and how they’re actually used.
💎 The things you reach for constantly are easy to get to.
💎 Everyone knows where things belong
💎 You’re not having to move five things just to find the one thing you need.
💎 The systems are simple enough that you can keep them going without spending your life maintaining them.
💎 You’re not cramming every cupboard to the absolute limit just because there’s technically room.
💎 And perhaps my favourite one: you choose what works over what just looks good. Because a beautiful system that nobody uses isn’t really a system. It’s just a pretty picture.

There also needs to be room for real life. The post that needs dealing with, the school bags that come home every afternoon, the random bits that need somewhere sensible to go, and the busy week where everything gets a little chaotic.

That’s why I’m not a fan of trying to organise your entire home in one go. Start with the things that are causing the most friction and make those easier first.

There are quite a few things I don’t do when I’m helping someone get organised👇

📍 I don’t arrive with a load of matching storage boxes and insist everything needs to be beige.
📍 I don’t decide what you should keep based on what I would keep.
📍 And I definitely don’t expect you to maintain a complicated system that only works when life is calm and everyone is behaving themselves.

Because your home is not a showroom. It’s where you live. It’s where people come and go, meals are made, laundry appears, paperwork piles up and life happens.

And after 10 years of doing this, one thing I know is that there really isn’t one ‘right’ way to organise a home.

What matters is finding a way that works for you, how you live, what you own and what you actually need your home to do for you.

Sometimes that means sorting out the room that’s become the dumping ground. Sometimes it means tackling the paperwork you’ve been avoiding. Sometimes it’s simply working out where things should live so you’re not constantly moving them from one place to another.

And sometimes you just need someone alongside you to help you get started, make a plan and get it done.

Your home doesn’t need to be perfect. It just needs to work better for you.

There are some things in life that are easy to keep putting off, and getting your important paperwork in order is probably one of them.

You might know exactly where everything is, but if someone else suddenly had to step in and deal with things for you, would they know where to start?

Your Will, Powers of Attorney, insurance details, financial information, property documents and important contacts are all things worth thinking about.

And these days, it’s not just the paperwork in a filing cabinet either. So much of our lives is managed online, which makes it even more important to have a clear idea of what you have and where someone would find it if they needed to.

You don’t need a complicated filing system or to spend an entire weekend sorting through every piece of paper you’ve ever kept.

Start with the things that would genuinely matter, make sure they’re up to date, get rid of anything that’s no longer relevant, and make it easy for someone else to understand what they’ve found.

Most importantly, tell someone you trust where the important information is.

It’s not the most exciting job, and you may not know when someone else will need to use it. But when that time comes, having everything organised could make an already difficult situation that little bit easier.

And sometimes that’s the best reason to get organised in the first place.

Instead, look at what’s about to make everyday life harder.

💎And, perhaps most importantly, does everyone know how the system works, or are you still the person everyone asks?

Because the goal isn’t to have nothing left to do, it’s to stop the jobs around your home from feeling like they’re constantly waiting for you 👀

When things have a place, routines make sense and everyone knows how things work, you spend less time thinking about what needs doing next, and that leaves a little more room for being present and enjoying your home, your time and the people around you.

Apparently everything is “kinda chic” at the moment, so I thought I’d give it a go 😂

And actually, I think there’s something quite chic about a home that simply works.

The truth is, I don’t!

But I do love what an organised home gives me 👇

I love knowing that when Saturday arrives, I’m not immediately thinking about the washing that needs doing, the paperwork I’ve been avoiding or the cupboard I really should tackle.

I’d much rather be out walking our puppy, Ottie, spending time with my girls, enjoying a coffee in the garden or simply having the freedom to decide how I spend my weekend.

It’s not an easy question to ask yourself.

Most of us don’t like thinking about it, so we tell ourselves we’ll sort it out another day, next month, or when life feels a little less busy.

But “another day” has a habit of never quite arriving.
This is something that’s become incredibly important to me for a very personal reason.

When my mum passed away suddenly 9 years ago, finding the paperwork we needed wasn’t straightforward. At a time when we were already grieving, there was the added stress of having to search for important documents and trying to piece everything together.

It taught me a lesson I’ll never forget. Earlier this year, when my aunt passed away, we’d done things differently. We’d organised everything in advance, so when the time came, we knew exactly where everything was.

It didn’t make losing her any easier, but it did remove a huge amount of unnecessary stress.
