There are quite a few things I don’t do when I’m helping someone get organised👇

📍 I don’t arrive with a load of matching storage boxes and insist everything needs to be beige.
📍 I don’t decide what you should keep based on what I would keep.
📍 And I definitely don’t expect you to maintain a complicated system that only works when life is calm and everyone is behaving themselves.

Because your home is not a showroom. It’s where you live. It’s where people come and go, meals are made, laundry appears, paperwork piles up and life happens.

And after 10 years of doing this, one thing I know is that there really isn’t one ‘right’ way to organise a home.

What matters is finding a way that works for you, how you live, what you own and what you actually need your home to do for you.

Sometimes that means sorting out the room that’s become the dumping ground. Sometimes it means tackling the paperwork you’ve been avoiding. Sometimes it’s simply working out where things should live so you’re not constantly moving them from one place to another.

And sometimes you just need someone alongside you to help you get started, make a plan and get it done.

Your home doesn’t need to be perfect. It just needs to work better for you.

There are some things in life that are easy to keep putting off, and getting your important paperwork in order is probably one of them.

You might know exactly where everything is, but if someone else suddenly had to step in and deal with things for you, would they know where to start?

Your Will, Powers of Attorney, insurance details, financial information, property documents and important contacts are all things worth thinking about.

And these days, it’s not just the paperwork in a filing cabinet either. So much of our lives is managed online, which makes it even more important to have a clear idea of what you have and where someone would find it if they needed to.

You don’t need a complicated filing system or to spend an entire weekend sorting through every piece of paper you’ve ever kept.

Start with the things that would genuinely matter, make sure they’re up to date, get rid of anything that’s no longer relevant, and make it easy for someone else to understand what they’ve found.

Most importantly, tell someone you trust where the important information is.

It’s not the most exciting job, and you may not know when someone else will need to use it. But when that time comes, having everything organised could make an already difficult situation that little bit easier.

Instead, look at what’s about to make everyday life harder.

💎Is there somewhere for the things everyone needs every morning?
💎And, perhaps most importantly, does everyone know how the system works, or are you still the person everyone asks?

Apparently everything is “kinda chic” at the moment, so I thought I’d give it a go 😂

And actually, I think there’s something quite chic about a home that simply works.

Most of us have that one room.

The room you keep meaning to sort, but somehow never quite get around to 🤨

Maybe it’s the spare room that’s become a dumping ground. Maybe it’s the room where the kids’ old things have collected, the home office that’s no longer usable, or the space where everything ends up when you don’t know where else to put it.

You probably don’t think about it all the time, but every time you walk past the door there’s that little voice saying, “I really need to sort that room.”

And that’s the thing about that room. It’s not just the physical stuff taking up space. It’s the unfinished jobs and decisions that sit quietly in the back of your mind too 🤯

The longer you leave it, the bigger the job can start to feel, which makes it even easier to put off.

But you don’t have to tackle the whole thing in one exhausting weekend, and you certainly don’t have to know exactly what to do with everything before you begin.

And imagine how it would feel to walk past it without that little voice reminding you that you still need to deal with it 👌

That’s the part I love - the moment a room stops being a problem and starts becoming part of your life again.

People sometimes assume that because I help people get organised and create space in their heads and homes, I must love spending my time sorting cupboards, folding laundry and keeping on top of every job around the house 🏡

The truth is, I don’t!

But I do love what an organised home gives me 👇

I love knowing that when Saturday arrives, I’m not immediately thinking about the washing that needs doing, the paperwork I’ve been avoiding or the cupboard I really should tackle.

I’d much rather be out walking our puppy, Ottie, spending time with my girls, enjoying a coffee in the garden or simply having the freedom to decide how I spend my weekend.

That’s why I believe good organisation isn’t about creating a perfect home. It’s about creating simple systems that make everyday life easier, so your home doesn’t constantly demand your attention.

📍 Life will always be busy.
📍 Laundry will always exist.
📍 There’ll always be jobs to do.

If something happened to you tomorrow, would someone know where to find everything?

It’s not an easy question to ask yourself.

Most of us don’t like thinking about it, so we tell ourselves we’ll sort it out another day, next month, or when life feels a little less busy.

But “another day” has a habit of never quite arriving.
This is something that’s become incredibly important to me for a very personal reason.

When my mum passed away suddenly 9 years ago, finding the paperwork we needed wasn’t straightforward. At a time when we were already grieving, there was the added stress of having to search for important documents and trying to piece everything together.

It taught me a lesson I’ll never forget. Earlier this year, when my aunt passed away, we’d done things differently. We’d organised everything in advance, so when the time came, we knew exactly where everything was.

It didn’t make losing her any easier, but it did remove a huge amount of unnecessary stress.

That’s why I’m so passionate about helping people get their paperwork in order. Not because I expect the worst, and not because I want people to spend their time thinking about difficult things. But because it’s one of the most thoughtful things you can do for the people you love.

But the reason it’s worth doing isn’t because you’ll end up with a perfectly organised cupboard. It’s because of what comes afterwards.

I know I should do it...
